Why I Am A Proud Liberal

There is only one issue that I can give the right wing maniacs credit for over the last twenty-five years and that’s their rather awesome ability to make the word “Liberal” into an insult and the word “conservative” into a word spoken only by the gods.  Other than that, the entire conservative philosophy is one based on evil and greed.

Therefore, allow me to list the many reasons that I am proud to the depths of my very soul (if such exists) to proclaim myself a liberal and my absolute enemy the  malevolence that calls itself conservatism.  There is no order or organization to these proclamations, they are simply the flow of beliefs I hold dear and absolute.

I am a liberal because I believe that the teachings of Christ and Buddha and the early Mohammad should be the basis for any nation that desires to consider itself a civilization.

I am a liberal because I believe that, if there ever were such a place as “Eden” it is, in its absolute truest sense, this entire planet and universe.

I am a liberal because I see that there is more than enough food and water and medical care and shelter and education for every inhabitant of this planet.

I am a liberal because I believe that the word “enough” is vastly more important than “more” and that “ours” must always be superior to “mine”.

I am a liberal because I believe that violence is the reaction of the stupid and the mean.

I am a liberal because I believe that we are caretakers of this planet, not its owners.

I am a liberal because I believe that money has a use but the accumulation of vast amounts of it is a sickness and not a virtue.

I am a liberal because I believe that the most important responsibility of every single adult is the care and education and love for every single child on this planet.

I am a liberal because I see any act that harms a child as evil and diseased.

I am a liberal because I believe that my body belongs to me and that I alone am responsible for any decisions regarding my health and future.

I am a liberal because I believe that we must respect those who make the world a better place for all and reject those who wish to make it a better place for only those few who can buy or steal comfort and power.

I am a liberal because I believe that America can lead the world into a new and enlightened era or continue our sad journey into the pits of whatever passes for hell.

I am a liberal because I believe that the most basic religion I can acknowledge is simple kindness to all.

I am a liberal because I believe that the information provided by a uninhibited and questioning press is the basic bulwark of any free society.

I am a liberal because I believe that wars are ALWAYS started by the most evil and ignorant among us and create profit for those least useful and least decent among us.

I am a liberal because I believe that life is is the universe’s most precious possession and the act of taking a life is the most debased any human can carry out.

I am a liberal because I look at the heavens and realize that we are but insignificant bacteria upon a speck of dust orbiting an average star in an average galaxy among billions if not uncountable trillions of other galaxies.

I am a liberal because, if some god created us in its image, then that isn’t a god I want anything to do with since it would mean that god is as greedy and violent and mean as we are.

I am a liberal because I believe that the theory of evolution must be altered to acknowledge that, in cases such as Jerry Fallwell and George Bush and Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly and Osama bin Laden and the entire Kansas State School Board, some are obviously left behind in the struggle towards the next evolutionary achievements.

I am a liberal because I believe that human labor is ALWAYS superior to mere capital and that organized labor must be open to all workers.

I am a liberal because I believe that the most important among us such as teachers and nurses are respected the least while the least important such as “athletes” and politicians are allowed to steal from the poorest to enrich themselves and those scatterbrained individuals seem to garner near worship.

I am a liberal because I believe that religion has its place in the hearts of individuals but that any act that inflicts that very personal belief system into the lives of those who have no need for it is evil at its most basic and the cause of more human suffering than any other act of ignorance in history.

I am a liberal because I believe that this universe may be one among an infinite number of others and that it can be explained merely by the reality that it exists as easily as by the need for some higher power to have created it.

I am a liberal because I believe that the Bill of Rights is the most astounding and empowering document to have ever come from the mind of mere mortals and that anyone who seeks to limit the rights that it brings must be removed immediately and forever from any office or position that person might have soiled.

I am a liberal because I believe that debate is the most patriotic function in a democracy and that anyone who attempts to limit that debate can never be considered a true American.

I am a liberal because I believe that education is the greatest gift that evolution has bestowed upon mankind and that there is never a point of being “over educated”.

I am a liberal because I believe that every problem that we face can be solved through the simple acknowledgement that the pain of any is the shame of the many.

Finally, I am a liberal because I believe that the most basic measure of any act is this; does it do harm to any other living creature?

Jesus gave us the most incredible guidelines in his Sermon on the Mount and was rewarded with death at the hands of the conservatives of his day.  Buddha gave us the most basic questions that must be asked by each of us if we hope to soften this world for all and has been ignored by the rest of humanity as too “soft on crime and too liberal” (an actual quote received through one of my stores).  Mohammad spoke out against violence and hate until he was enveloped in the mean spirited “kindness” of the fundamentalist Christians of his day.

In our world, those that have spoken out for justice, Lincoln and John and Robert Kennedy and Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and so many others have all been murdered for their efforts while halfwits like Reagan and Limbaugh and O’Reilly and their ilk enrich themselves through the dissemination of lies and hate.

Nevertheless, I am a liberal because I believe that the majority of humanity seeks a world of justice and fairness and decency and that we will, with any luck, eventually both survive this sad period in our history as well as to succeed in our quest to unite the world as the greatest teachers have taught.  I am a liberal because to believe in any other world view is to succumb to the lure of greed and violence and stupidity that is the absolute and eternal hallmark of the Republican conservative.
